Sad news...

Bill Howie, the man in his late 80's who faithfully raked the leaves in the eastern common area on Barberry passed away Wednesday, June 25th. His wife, Mary, is still at the Buckner Retirement Home. Bill and his wife had lived on Barberry since the 1950's when he managed a couple of grocery stores along Fort Worth Avenue. The funeral was held last Wednesday in Morgan, TX. Their house was sold to an investor and is currently in the process of being painted and repaired before it will go on the market again.

Fundraising

To be eligible for city and area grants, many organizations require grantees to have matching funds on hand at the time the petition for a grant is submitted. With a perpetually low account balance, SPV is essentially leaving free money on the table that could be put to use in our neighborhood. We are now looking for unique and creative ways to raise the money in the kitty to make this possible. Plans are under way to create an SPV neighborhood cookbook for sale at events to generate funds to support neighborhood projects.

Dallas Crime Reports in Your Email

Daily Crime Report: If you enjoy reading the "Skulduggery" section of the Oak Cliff People newspaper, you might also enjoy subscribing to a daily Internet crime report. This can be done by going to www.dailycrimereport.com and following the subscrip-tion prompts. In filling out the subscription form, our area is Section 412. You'll receive a daily crime report noting specific events in our area. This is a great and easy way to keep up with our neighborhood crime statistics.

Fall Home Tour (OOCCL)

Hats off and many thanks to Billy and David at 2203 Colorado for submitting their home for the Fall tour. This is scheduled for October 11th and 12th, so mark your calendars. Tickets are required for this and will be available from several different locations which will be announced as the date gets closer. In addition to this, if anyone else would like to submit their home for consideration for the tour, please contact JB Jones at board@stevensparkvillage.org. Docents and porch sitters are also generally needed for the tour.

Old Oak Cliff Conservation League Grants

Another wonderful facet of the OOCCL is a grant program that it extends to the member neighborhoods, including Stevens Park Village. These grants can cover a wide range of subjects and projects. The OOCCL reviews and decides on the grants, then if awarded, matches funding to a certain percent for the project. The available grant money for 2008 was $15,000.00!

Get Involved with the Old Oak Cliff Conservation League

JB Jones here, from 2214 West Colorado. I was recently asked to be the neighborhood's representative to the Conservation League. For those of you who aren't familiar with this group, the Old Oak Cliff Conservation League is a non profit 501(c)3 that functions as an umbrella organization for 26 neighborhoods in Oak Cliff. They sponsor many different events throughout the year, one of the more notable being the October Home Tour. This is a great way to see neighborhoods that you may not know about and to tour great homes and buildings of tremendously diverse styles.

News & Issues

SPV proudly stays involved in issues involving our neighborhood and our North Oak Cliff community as a whole. Our Board was one of three Neighborhood Associations to meet with the developer of the large retail Pinnacle Park, at Cockrell Hill. Our group was instrumental in defeating the decision to build a racetrack in the same area. From La Reunion’s proposed developments, to the city’s continued interest in the Trinity River Corridor, Stevens Park Village acts as a voice for resident advocacy.

Neighborhood Stabilization Overlay

Dallas is going through a tremendous growth spurt with homes, high rises and new building projects. However, developers have begun to buy homes, tear them down, and build larger homes that do not necessarily fit the original architectural esthetics of neighborhoods.

Trinity River Corridor

Ah, the Trinity River. Many have said it remains the divider between “Dallas” and “Oak Cliff.” With more than a decade worth of work behind us, we can still see progress. And one day Our Community will no longer face the “crossing the river” syndrome.

A Texas Landmark in Oak Cliff gets Restored and Renovated

Once  the heart of the southwest Dallas community—a  grand, palatial gathering place marked by a brightly lit sign that spelled T-E-X-A-S, touting top-of-the-line acoustics and appurtenances, the Texas Theatre was opened at 231 West Jefferson Boulevard  with fanfare on April 21, 1931, by billionaire  Howard Hughes.  The Texas Theatre was the product of long time Oak Cliff resident and entrepreneur, C. R. McHenry. His dream was  to build a theater with state-of-the-art projection and sound equipment.
